Timber still is the most important building material in the world. However, the possibilities of technical quality control in the forest are extremely low at present. The visual assessment of trees and stem wood is of limited value only. Exact and reliable data can hardly be obtained without technical measures. However, successful forest management requires reliable and precise data concerning the stock, the incremental development or growth trend and the wood damages.
